“QUADRAT” : forthcoming, 2025

Quadrat is a piece comprised of a dozen ceramic tiles. Taking cues from scientific quadrat biodiversity sampling, each tile is imprinted with a different portion of the landscape—natural and built environments. Tiles are left unfired, so they can be returned to the earth.

Taking inspiration from khulars, I engage with ceramics as a reflection of nutrient cycling on the planet. As an ecologist, I see nutrients as ever in balance—transforming from one form to another, eternally. I see art, and my ceramic art practice in particular, as a way to participate in this cycling. the choice of firing is a heavy one: pieces I create and fire may sequester those nutrients for hundreds, if not thousands of years. in this way, I become part of this perpetual practice. earth that is millions of years old becomes a functional form using a practice that is thousands of years old. My participation either returns this material to the earth to be infinitely regenerated (unfired pottery, as in khulars) or exists in another form for hundreds of years after my lifetime (fired pottery).
